BRANDS
Zenith as a brand needs no introduction, but perhaps this 1990s El Primero Chronomaster does.
In 1969, Zenith unveiled the El Primero, the very first fully automatic chronograph caliber, which easily explains its name. This movement was a feat of engineering and technology which the brand managed to pair with elegant and classic-looking designs that still prevail to this day. This particular El Primero Chronomaster Ref. 01 0240 410 dates back to the late 1990s as the 410 caliber was manufactured from 1994 to 1998. It is a true marvel of horology.
The caliber 410 is a column wheel chronograph which beats at 36,000 BPH and comes with roughly 50 hours of power reserve. It has a triple calendar and moon phase complication as can be seen on the 12-hour sub-register at the 6 o’clock and the indication of the day and month of the year at the 10 and 2 positions, respectively. The indication of “Chronometre” above the pinion indicates that it is COSC certified which matches the serial number engraved on the movement.
The case is made of stainless steel and measures 40mm in diameter, 46.6mm lug-to-lug, 13.2mm thick and has a lug width of 20mm. It has a stepped-case design and displays a classic yet elegant design. The rectangular lugs gently turn down toward the wrist and their shape is echoed by that of the square chronograph pushers and a rectangular motif on the crown. The white/silver dial presents a balanced design thanks to the alternation of Roman numerals and small triangles for the hour markers which pair nicely with the polished hands.
Lastly, this unique piece of horology comes complete with a black Zenith leather strap and buckle. This timepiece serves as a testament to both craftsmanship and aesthetics, an exemplary addition for discerning collectors.
Condition
Presented in excellent condition, this vintage Zenith El Primero Chronomaster Ref. 01 0240 410 is a rarity, having seen minimal wear. The stainless steel case, displaying only minor scratches. The Zenith crown ensures time adjustment, while the chronograph function, activated by pushers, operates with precision. The sapphire glass remains pristine. Notably, the triple calendar and moon phase complication function seamlessly, visible at the 6 o’clock and 10/2 positions. The white/silver dial and hands are impeccably preserved.
